This is a reprint of a book written by a nurse who served with the Army of Tennessee for almost the entire war. It is a fascinating look at the events that transpired after the battles were over. An interesting prospective on the war and its consequences.
Journal of a Confederate Nurse [annotated] eBook Kate Cumming Arthur Wyllie
I really enjoyed this journal of a nurse during the War Between the States. It's written like an actual journal--entries some days, none others--and because it was first published the year after the war ended, there is not a lot of post-War pontificating going on. The author is writing as events happen, and is recording her reaction to them. It gives the reader a wonderful and altogether too rare chance to "get inside the head" of a Confederate civilian, and perhaps see another perspective of this seminal event in our nation's history. I also find it interesting that she records the names and units of many of her patients, especially those who die. If someone is doing family history research on a soldier who fought and was wounded in the Western theater, this could be a gold mine. The book is very readable, but if one is not an authority on the Civil War, I suggest a handy reference book such as a daily almanac of the Civil War,just to refresh memory and clear up confusion. After all, the book's original readers would have known all the generals, battles, etc. mentioned in this book. It is only due to the passage of time and negligence of history that we do not.
