Perfect romance. Perfect nightmare. Sometimes it's a fine line.
Meet Key West native Renita Daughtry - 22, wide-eyed, gorgeous, and very much in love with love. In other words, an irresistible target for professional impostor and pathological liar Richie Pestucci, who plans to charm her into utter helplessness.
But there's just one problem. Renita's seeming naiveté masks a lot of savvy and a will of velvet-coated steel, and it isn't long before Richie, now smitten with his intended victim, starts to wonder just who is gaming who. As his cynical poise dissolves and the lovers' game of cat-and-mouse grows subtler and sexier, things start going dangerously and hilariously wrong. So wrong, in fact, that setting them right will require the combined efforts of a heroic twin brother, a fiercely loyal uncle who takes his pest control job very seriously, and a sharp-dressing retired mobster with a singing chihuahua.
Seamlessly blending tender romance with raucous caper, One Strange Date massages the heart strings even as it tickles the funny bone and explores the deep everyday mystery of how and why we choose to believe.
One Strange Date Key West Capers Book 12 (Audible Audio Edition) Laurence Shames Jem Matzan Books
SHAMES CONTINUES TO SURPRISEI’ve read most of Laurence Shames Key West novels, and one of the things I admire about them is how different they all are. Shames is that rare author with a great personal style but who doesn’t fall back on a formula. All of his books manage to be both funny and suspenseful, tough-minded but also sweet. Even when the crime/caper plots tend toward the outrageous, the exchanges between the characters remain believable and human. He makes you root for them.
In One Strange Date, the main characters are a seemingly spacey and naïve 22-year old woman and a polished, practiced NY con man. Seems like no contest, right? Except the young woman turns out to be a lot savvier than she seems, and she gently charms her way into the con man’s heart—an organ he didn’t seem to know he had. As the balance of power keeps shifting, things keep getting edgier, funnier, and more strangely tender, all at the same time! No plot spoilers here, but watching the author untangle the many twists and complications was a huge amount of fun.

One Strange Date Key West Capers Book 12 (Audible Audio Edition) Laurence Shames Jem Matzan Books Reviews
Having read most of Laurence Shames novels, I was glad to get reacquainted with Bert the Shirt and Pete Amsterdam in another Key West Caper. It is not a life changing story, but a fun easy read. Bert the Shirt is my favorite mafioso of all time, and reminds me of the uncle we all wish we had. The story is overall somewhat predicable with a few twists, but as most of Mr. Shames novels, it puts a smile on my face and leaves me wanting to read another one of his novels.
It's so great to have Larry Shames back in the saddle again. This is the newest in his new run of Key West whack-job crime stories. And though at the end it's a bit more grim than his other Key West tales—with fewer yuks along the way—it's a super entertaining yarn. Bert the Shirt and Pete Amsterdam are back in action, helping a pretty coed who's fallen in with a tricky con man to escape the mob thugs who are after them. Like Larry's other Key West stories, this one would make a pretty fine flick. The only guy who does this sort of thing better is Karl Hiassen. My advice Don't miss ONE HOT DATE.
Have reviewed love the Key West books and this one shows how he continues to get better. The plot is gently convoluted, the characters well defined, the action plentiful and the really, really bad guys GT their comeuppance. What more could you want? Shames is a really fun read and seems to never be lost at creating a really funny novel. Read him! ASAP!
These Key West capers, all of them, are gems, and "One Strange Date" nicely continues the trend. Colorful, offbeat characters; engaging and snappy dialogue (and spot-on dialect from the NY transplants and "visitors"); a delightful and inviting setting; entertaining plots tied in the end with a neat and satisfying bow. Bert the Shirt and his bespectacled canine companion are not to be missed. Can't wait to visit Key West, look for these people and see their haunts. Thank you Laurence Shames -- ya did it again.
I was delighted to see another book in the Key West series. The more so since I was laid up with a broken vertebrae and it was like providence sent me some favorite reading.
Fans of this series will celebrate that a new one is available the usual blend of old and new. Bert the Shirt is sustaining thread, and a new cast provides the usual Shames quirky innocent romance. I won't lie you're going to see a lot of the plot coming. But there should also be a few surprises as things close out. But is that why we read Shames? To string out on plot twists? I'm guessing you also follow him for the writing, the characters, the unique charm he spins above his warts-and-all portrait of Key West.
It's great to see this wonderful series continue, and always great to see a new book of any description from Laurence Shames.
Shames returns to Key West, and he doesn't disappoint. If you're a Shames fan, you'll love it, and if you're not, you should give him a try. Shames continues to find new ways to explore the insanity of Key West and bring us interesting characters and situations. Of course, Bert the Shirt is still around with Nacho--maybe the coolest character around and the man to see if you're in trouble in the Keys. This time around Bert comes to the rescue and uses his experience and wisdom to "do what needs to be done" to deal with an impossible situation. And Nacho does his part as well! Thanks Mr. Shames!
I liked this about the same as all the Laurence Shames KEY WEST novels, which is to say a lot. He is an economical writer in that he quickly and convincingly paints the scene or the character and lets the situation forge ahead. Definitely something to brighten your day and with comedy and affection. The only problem is that you want the next book IMMEDIATELY to keep the fun going as long as possible.
